CHAPTER TWELVE

“Did you say Budrians?” Pain interrupted while Marty explained his distraction plans.

“Aye.” The other man nodded enthusiastically. “Dey named demselves affa some ol’ Spanish bloke named Budria. You pro’lly ne’er ’eard about ’im, but he was supposed to be some kinda major league anarchist.”

The partners exchanged glances.

“We are familiar with the name Budria,” the detective admitted, “but not any kind of group called Budrians.”

They had indeed heard the name before and even had some adventures aboard a boat christened The Budria. Those adventures had concluded with the vessel being blown up in a marina. The poor boat hadn’t done anything wrong but it was used by some very nasty people and the partners now wondered how nasty their new ally’s friends were.

“Dey fancy demselves as anarcho-extremists—ain’t dat a mouthful? I’s worked wid ’em a few times and dis is roight up der alley. ’T’ain’t none o’fem ’ave any fondness for da correctional system, so dey won’t even ask to be paid, jes’ as long as they get’s ta do some damage. Strange group dey is, fer sure, but perfect fer dis kinda job.”

Marty went on to explain that with a couple of days’ notice, they could arrange for as many as possible to have visitation sessions with prisoners at New Bern who were part of their network. Once they were gathered inside the waiting area, they would start a fight amongst themselves.

If the ruckus they caused was big enough, a large number of the guards would hopefully be summoned to break the fight up. This should put the prison in lockdown with minimal supervision left for the prisoners in their cells.

The distraction would have to be carefully timed to start within a few minutes after the partners arrived, but further discussions were tabled for the next day. They had many arrangements to make, but at least they had the method of distraction settled.

As the Brit headed to the couch, he snatched up the pair of noise-canceling headphones from the end table where he had left them. “Don’t send me to da basement, guv. I didn’t sleep well last noight and youse’ll be wantin’ me well-rested.”

He didn’t wait for a reply and simply stretched on his back, slipped the headphones on, and with his hands behind his head for a pillow, closed his eyes.

Pain looked helplessly at Agony. Against his wishes, he would again have the big Brit as a houseguest. She stood and headed to the door with an inner smile. Poor Pain.

“Maybe he plays chess.” She tried to help him find something positive in his distress.

He hung his head in silence.

“I hope he likes donuts.” She opened the door. “Mañana.”

Her partner, his head still lowered pitifully, responded with a weak wave. His entire demeanor seemed to ask when he’d lost control.
